DAS SPRUNGBRETT/THE SPRINGBOARD (text by Eva Brede) „the curtist and the arrator“ is a future experimental exhibition series which examines the experiences of a new, free curator who is close to artists. the series is about relationships and cooperations between artists and curators, friendships and complicities, but also about dependencies and boundaries between each other and also between private and public spaces. the project will take place in the future apartment of the curator in exchange with private rooms of artists from berlin, munich, vienna, karlsruhe, graz, zagreb and nicosia. besides the aspect of relationship between artists and curators the project is about flexibility and moving houses. in times of airbnb the project asks questions about private rooms which become public but are privatised ones. by sharing her home with artists for a certain time the curator offers more insight views as a curator to an artist and an audience and constructs a 1:1, a face-to-face-situation. the results can be shown either in her flat or in the artists private rooms or just be developped in each apartement and displayed elsewhere, in offspaces, galleries, in private or public spaces. the future of the ongoing project can be watched at www.thecurtistandthearrator.net „the curtist and the arrator“ is introduced in graz, in a two-room-apartment of 1905. in this apartment the idea of the exhibition series was developed.
the rooms are facing each other, in the same style and same size, but with different wooden floors. the room with the more bourgeois wooden floor, the so called „fischgrätenparkett“ and a private saloon atmosphere points out to a private space, a car sales company which seems to appropriate the whole house on the opposite side. although the apartment is situated on the 3rd floor, the viewer is directly confronted with a parkingdeck of the company out of the window which makes it appear like a strange theatre stage. according to this view of a privatised space in public from a private room and the view out of the window to the left which offers the most touristic motiv of graz, the „uhrturm“, a site specific installation called „the springboard“ comes up, out of a couch, that had to stay in this room of the subrented flat and belongs like the rest of the apartment to a friend. the couch as a found object like the apartment itself has to be treated sensible and is an essential part of the installation which was a challenge for the artists and the curator as well.
the site-specific installation plays with curatorial myths of graz, which is discussed as a springboard city for curators and also with the private space outside in the private room inside, which is made public because of an exhibition. based on a curatorial concept which was called the „springboard“ and developed in conversation between the curator (eva brede) and the artist (keyvan paydar), it was realized and further developed by keyvan paydar and two exchange art students (ita kosović, mihael frančić) of Škola likovnih umjetnosti Split, Croatia.
